Each year CEC invites a few interns to help us facilitate with keyour programs and special projects in exchange for a small stipend or school credit (see list below). Position: Legislative Advocacy & Outreach Interns
Location: Denver, Grand Junction, Ft. Collins

Position Summary
Several internships will be available across the state, forming a statewide legislative advocacy network across Colorado. These internships will focus on community organizing and outreach for CEC’s legislative advocacy program, “Capitol Watch”. Internship responsibilities will include recruiting and engaging volunteers and community members in advocacy work throughout the legislative session, January-May. Interns will motivate volunteers to take action on conservation community priorities and will be responsible for creatively utilizing online media, such as facebook, myspace, blogs, and webinars in order to disseminate information about key bills and legislators in targeted districts. Interns will also be responsible for sending out website and email updates, as well as making contacts with volunteers and district constituents. These internships offer an excellent opportunity to learn about Colorado conservation issues, gain community organizing and campaign experience, conduct grassroots activism, and participate in campaigns that aim to change environmental legislation on the state level and improve the quality of life in Colorado. Upon successful completion, interns will receive a certificate of internship, invaluable contacts within the conservation community, credit for school work based on individual program requirements, and a fun, instructive experience with a local conservation organization.
Responsibilities
- Represent CEC at networking events, recruit volunteers, and educate citizens in order to organize grassroots support for CEC legislative priorities.
- Set up educational forums, phone banks, turnout for hearings and events, and other campaign activities as needed.
- Help organizers build business and community support for our campaigns through outreach, media, and other activities.
- Assist CEC staff with phone calls and mailings to our members and activists as needed.
- Update website, facebook, and myspace pages regularly with legislative information.
- Assist with database management, data entry, and other projects as needed.
- Conduct weekly meetings with supervisor and other interns.
Term of Position
Winter/Spring Semester: The position will follow a normal school break schedule, beginning January and ending in May.
Work Schedule
15-25 hours/week (includes weekends and evenings).
Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate for this position is outgoing and enthusiastic about working with people, has excellent communication and problem solving skills, and most importantly, has a passion for protecting Colorado’s environment and quality of life. Students studying in the areas of environmental studies, political science, liberal arts, geography, and communications are encouraged to apply. Specific background requirements include:
- Experience managing volunteers and some organizing experience are helpful, training will be provided.
- Superior organizational, communication, and presentation skills.
- Ability to multi-task and manage short- and long-term deadlines.
- Working knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint; databases, a plus.
- Capacity to work effectively with a diversity of people and constituencies.
- Have own vehicle with valid Colorado driver’s license, valid registration, and insurance in order to travel throughout Colorado, sometimes on short notice.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed.

Position: Media and Outreach Intern

Position Summary
Intern will be primarily involved in creation of video and audio (podcasts) clips for use in campaign outreach and education. Interns will conceive, record, and edit videos and podcasts on a variety of issues, and help publish media in a number of venues for optimal campaign and outreach use. Intern will also help creatively utilize social networking sites – such as Facebook, MySpace, blogs, YouTube, and other online communities – to disseminate information about CEC priorities and engage volunteers and activists. Intern may also help brainstorm and produce other creative online media projects.
Intern will also be responsible for assisting Online Communications Coordinator with an assortment of data entry, website upkeep, and other online outreach tasks as necessary.
This internship offers an excellent opportunity to learn about Colorado conservation issues, gain online outreach and organizing experience, and add some creative input to campaigns and online outreach strategies. Upon successful completion, interns will receive a certificate of internship, invaluable contacts within the conservation community, credit for school work based on individual program requirements, and a fun, instructive experience with a local conservation organization. This internship has a stipend of $500 for the semester-long commitment, and students may receive school credits depending on policies of student’s school and program requirements.
Responsibilities
- Help conceive and create and informational videos and podcasts for specific campaign issues.
- Be available to help record events, meetings and press conferences (primarily in the Denver area, but occasionally may be opportunities for travel; occasionally may also require an evening or weekend).
- Format video for online viewing, and post and archive videos.
- Help format and finalize online photo database.
- Help staff conceive, create, and publish podcasts on campaign and organizational issues.
- Update CEC and coalition partner websites, blogs, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, and other social networking pages regularly with important campaign updates and outreach efforts.
- Assist with database management, data entry, and other projects as needed.

- Superior organizational, communication, and presentation skills.
- Ability to distill campaign messages and conceive of and execute creative storytelling/message communication.
- Ability to multi-task and manage short- and long-term deadlines.
- Some experience with audio/video editing a plus, though training will be provided.
- Some experience with social networking web sites (Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, etc.)
- Detail-oriented and willing to assist with data-entry and web site maintenance tasks.

Position: Grassroots Campaign Internship Program

Position Summary
This intern will work directly with the Front Range Field Director to assist the director with organizing outreach and projects. The position provides the opportunity to attend community outreach events to build support for CEC’s current campaigns as well as helping with day-to-day office work. This internship offers an excellent opportunity to learn about Colorado conservation issues, gain community organizing and campaign experience, conduct grassroots activism, and participate in winning campaigns to protect wild lands and quality of life in Colorado. Upon successful completion, interns will receive a certificate of internship, invaluable contacts within the conservation community, credit for school work based on individual program requirements and a fun, invaluable experience with a local conservation organization.
Responsibilities:
- Take a lead on Web-based advocacy for CEC priority campaigns
- Engage citizens on Colorado conservation issues through presentations, meetings, and other public events
- Connect local communities to conservation campaigns through outreach and education to citizens and local businesses
- Assist CEC organizers with petition drives, phone banks, press events, turnout for hearings and events, supervising volunteers, and other campaign activities as needed
- Help with database management, data entry, and other projects as needed
- Working to organize and craft press releases as well as capturing video using our equipment
Term of Position: 6 months from the start date
Work Schedule: 25-30 hours/week (includes some weekends and evenings)
Compensation and Benefits: Internship stipend is $500.00 per month, no benefits included.
Minimum Qualifications: The ideal candidate for this position is outgoing and enthusiastic about working with people, has excellent communication and problem solving skills and most importantly, a passion for protecting Colorado’s wild lands and quality of life. Students with majors in the areas of environmental studies, political science, liberal arts, geography and communications are encouraged to apply. Specific background requirements requested include:
- Experience with wilderness education or leading hikes, training can be provided
- Familiarity with leading volunteers and organizing on environmental issues are helpful
- Excellent organizational, communication and presentation skills
- Ability to multi-task and manage short and long-term deadlines
- Working knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint; databases, a plus
- Capacity to effectively work with diverse individuals and constituencies
