Mapping the Issues
Colorado Environmental Coalition has been utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and maps for many years. Projects range from maintaining the database of proposed wilderness areas to smart growth and transportation, public lands issues, water, wildlife corridor mapping, oil and gas issues, and voting trends using precinct level data. GIS and mapping can be used on virtually any other issue or campaign that needs a problem solved, a pattern found, or just a visual representation of an area, as long as the there is a spatial component and the data is available.

Internet Map Server
Users with little or no GIS or mapping experience can create their own maps and look at different data sets of their choosing, all through a web browser. An Internet Map Server (IMS) is a web-based tool for delivering dynamic maps, GIS data, and services via the internet.
CEC partner Southern Rockies Ecosystem Project is maintaining an IMS for Colorado. The ArcIMS Conservation Mapping tool is an invaluable service for many groups and campaigns, providing critical and timely data to local groups that are working in the field on behalf of the most critical wildlands in the Southern Rockies. By merely connecting to the internet and clicking a few buttons, groups have access to data on wildlife linkages, threatened and endangered species, roadless area delineations, current and consistent forest service and BLM boundaries, and more. Check out the links below for the IMS tutorial and web browser to get started.
