The BLM's Uncompahgre Field Office (UFO) is in the beginning stages of revising their Resource Management Plan (RMP). The current management plan for this area was completed in 1985 and is in need of revision. In total the planning area encompasses approximately 675,677 surface acres within the UFO boundary. As the UFO is bisected by the Uncompahgre National Forest the area has been divided into two seperate planning units, the San Juan/San Miguel Resource Management Area and the Uncompahgre Basin Resource Managament Area, both of which will be addressed in this RMP revision process. The revision does not however include the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area, which is managed under a separate RMP, or the newly designated Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area, which will also operate under a separate RMP.

While CEC is addressing a number of planning issues in conjunction with other local conservation based organizations, our main focus is the land planning on the west end otherwise known as the San Juan/San Miguel Resource Management Area. Within this portion of the field office lies the Dolores River Canyon Citizens' Wilderness Proposal, a unique red rock landscape featuring over 30 miles of sinuous river canyons, at the heart of the Dolores River Basin campaign.
Our efforts within the RMP process remain focused on two things. First, gaining long term protections for the region’s culturally rich and ecologically diverse backcountry. And second, creating enjoyable and ecologically sustainable recreational opportunities for motorized and mechanized enthusiasts who are passionate about exploring and preserving the area's uniquely rural front country.
