When Gateway Canyons Resort opened six years ago with a convenience store, a 16-room motor inn, a fuel station and a restaurant, it was billed as a small tourism-economy generator in a ranching community that had lost its mining economy decades earlier. It was a comfort for Gateway residents who no longer were forced to make the 50-mile drive to Grand Junction if they needed to fill up with gas or grab a jug of milk. A quaint destination for weekend vacationers seeking to take in the red rock canyon scenery but not the crowds of Moab or Glenwood Springs. A novel distraction for out-of-town guests who could gawk at resort founder John Hendricks’ collection of classic cars....
