As our housing market crashes due to unbudgeted IOUs coming due, we must heed the critical lesson: the importance of understanding in advance the full, long-term costs of any new investment. We should apply this same lesson to another fiscal boondoggle looming in our region: the proposed superhighway from Golden to Broomfield (the “beltway”). Once its hidden costs are counted, its expense will far exceed the $500 million to $1.5 billion dollars Jefferson County, Broomfield and Arvada are seeking to build it. The beltway’s proponents have so far failed in their attempt to obtain public money to fund the beltway. Maybe this is because every study done on easing traffic congestion in the area has concluded that the beltway will not accomplish this. Uniformly, the studies conclude that the option that WILL address traffic is widening existing streets....
