Along the crystalline creek whose name means “beautiful” in Spanish, Mother Nature was doing her best to live up to the reputation. Woods’ roses, columbines and scarlet gillia (“fairy trumpets,” someone called them) joined a rainbow of wildflowers blanketing Hermosa Park down to the edge of the East Fork of Hermosa Creek where it wends past Durango Mountain Ski Resort. The flowers follow the creek, which slips out of the meadow and into a narrow gorge until its confluence with the Animas River near the hamlet also known as Hermosa. ...
