NEDERLAND —Regulating fracking and banishing genetically modified organisms from county land are priorities for all three Democrats vying for the District 1 seat on the Board of County Commissioners. At a forum this afternoon at TEENS, Inc. Youth & Family Center in Nederland, the candidates agreed that Boulder County should take a stronger stance against exploratory drilling that uses hydraulic fracturing to free up oil and gas deposits by imposing a moratorium. Candidate Garry Sanfacon, who manages the Boulder County government's Fourmile Canyon Fire recovery efforts, said the county should impose regulations so stringent that they “make it impossible for them to do business in Boulder County.” Added candidate Elise Jones, the executive director of the Colorado Environmental Coalition, “we have to fight back.” Candidate Rich Lopez, an attorney, said the county's land use code isn't up to date, giving oil and gas companies the advantage. “We haven't done our work to try to regulate it or stop it,” he said. None of the three supported the recent unanimous county commission decision to allow limited planting of GMOs on open space....
