Current statewide population growth projections show a massive influx of new residents moving to Colorado in the next 40 years. To meet this demand, water providers, state agencies, and other stakeholders are looking for options to serve thirsty new customers. Water conservation and efficiency programs are one of these options, and they are often cheaper, faster, and smarter than many traditional water supply sources. The more efficient our new growth can be, the less new water has to be developed—either by transfers out of agriculture or by the construction of expensive new supply projects.

Better Options for Home buyers. Better Options for Colorado.

HB 10-1358 presents buyers of new homes with the chance to select water efficient appliances and fixtures up front. By integrating high-efficiency toilets, ENERGYSTAR washers, low flow faucets and showerheads, and water-smart landscapes into new homes at the outset, we can avoid sending precious water and money down the drain.

  • This bill allows new home buyers to chose from several options, including:

    • Low use water fixtures like toilets, faucets, and showerheads
    • High efficiency washing machines that save both energy and water.
    • Low water use landscaping that not only saves water but is often low maintenance.

    • Water Smart Homes can use 20% less water than traditional new homes on average. If 100,000 Water Smart Homes were constructed over the next 40-years, by 2050, those homes would be saving approximately 2 billion gallons of water per year!

    • Manufacturers of fixtures and appliances currently provide highly efficient technologies that are well-designed and fit in with modern design aesthetics and are cost competitive.
