Position: Wilderness Organizer, Grand Junction, Colorado

Organizational Background: Founded in 1965, the Colorado Environmental Coalition is one of the state's preeminent conservation organizations. The Coalition serves as the grassroots-organizing arm of Colorado's conservation community, working from field offices in Denver, Grand Junction, and Craig. CEC's purpose is to organize the conservation community and Colorado citizens to win on priority issues and campaigns. CEC takes a leadership role in convening its 95 partner organizations and other allies, to identify, prioritize and select critical issues on which to focus, then organizes and mobilizes around these issues, and designs and implements successful campaigns to achieve policy wins on them. 

Position Summary: The Wilderness Organizer in the Grand Junction office plays a lead role in organizing citizens and coalition partners on regional wilderness campaigns. Reporting to the West Slope Field Director, this position works closely with other field staff, the Colorado Wilderness Network, and local activists to implement CEC's wilderness campaign and project goals. The major focus will be continuing to build public support for the protection of wilderness quality lands in the Greater Dominguez Canyon and Dolores River basin regions. 

Responsibilities:

  • Help devise and implement organizing strategies to achieve CEC wilderness campaign and project goals
  • Organize wilderness support for wilderness proposals from a diversity of interests, including ranchers, outfitters, hunters, Grand Junction area organizations, and activists
  • Secure support for wilderness from local and congressional elected officials
  • Coordinate effective media outreach on wilderness

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 2+ years experience or related experience with coordinating grassroots campaigns, community and/or political field organizing
  • Ability to recruit, manage and mobilize volunteers and citizens to take effective action
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work independently with minimal day to day supervision
  • Experience with event planning, leading wilderness hikes, and trail maintenance
  • Skilled at working effectively with a diversity of people and constituencies
  • Superior organizational, communication, and presentation skills
  • Capacity to multi-task and manage short- and long-term deadlines
  • Intermediate computer database management skills
  • Knowledge of Colorado politics, conservation, and public lands issues, a plus

Special Job Requirements: Have own vehicle with valid Colorado Driver's License, registration, and insurance that can reliably travel throughout Colorado, sometimes on short notice. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed.

Physical Demands: The Wilderness Organizer regularly uses a computer/phone, walks, hikes, bends, and climbs stairs. Must be able to maneuver, lift, and carry event materials, packages and supplies up to 25 pounds. Offices and buildings are totally smoke-free. 

Compensation and Benefits: $30,000-$34,000, plus excellent health/dental benefits, 403(b) with match, vacation, sick and sabbatical program.
