Energy Organizer; Denver, Colorado
Position Summary:
The Energy Organizer will play a lead role in managing campaigns and organizing citizens and partners on statewide energy and global warming issues. Reporting to the Program Director in the Denver office, this position works closely with other field staff, coalition partners, and local activists to implement CEC's campaign and project goals. A major focus will be to build public support to achieve a balanced energy program that protects Colorado's wildlands, wildlife, communities, water, and quality of life while appropriately providing for Colorado's energy needs. The Energy Organizer will educate the public, build diverse ally support for specific goals, and conduct outreach to elected officials, civic organizations, and others.
Responsibilities:
- Work to promote clean energy solutions and protect priority landscapes from proposed harmful energy projects.
- Ensure that when oil and gas development must occur, we have in place the best available protections to guide that development, through engaging in administrative planning processes and state and federal legislative campaigns.
- Build stronger infrastructure and increase coordination among the environmental community and its partners in Colorado around the global warming issue.
- Advocate for state legislative priorities on clean energy and global warming, and oil and gas, as needed.
- Coordinate and manage a coalition of groups dedicated to achieving clean energy solutions to global warming.
- Help devise and implement organizing strategies to achieve CEC campaign and project goals.
- Organize support for CEC campaign and project goals from a diversity of interests, including citizens, sportsmen, and clean energy business community and local governments across the state.
- Assist with West Slope efforts, such as public presentations and major press events.
- Coordinate effective media outreach on energy and global warming issues.
- Serve as a liaison with members of the administration and state legislature on these issues.
- Participate in CEC events and functions—staff meetings, board/staff retreats, major donor outreach, grant writing, articles for quarterly newsletter, website updates, staff trainings, and coalition outreach.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 2+ years experience or related experience with coordinating grassroots campaigns, community and/or political field organizing.
- Knowledge of state and regional energy and global warming issues.
- Ability to recruit, manage, and mobilize volunteers and citizens to take effective action.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to work independently with minimal day to day supervision.
- Experience with event planning and outreach activities.
- Skilled at working effectively with a diversity of people and constituencies.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and presentation skills.
- Capacity to multi-task and manage short and long-term deadlines.
- Knowledge of Colorado politics, conservation, and public lands issues a plus.
- Experience with earned media helpful.
Special Job Requirements: Have own vehicle with valid Colorado Driver's License, registration, and insurance that can reliably travel throughout Colorado, sometimes on short notice. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed.
Physical Demands: The Energy Organizer regularly uses a computer/phone, walks, bends, and climbs stairs. Must be able to maneuver, lift and carry event materials, packages and supplies up to 25 pounds. Offices and buildings are totally smoke-free.
Compensation and Benefits: Compensation is based on experience, plus excellent health/dental benefits, 403(b) with match, vacation, sick leave, and sabbatical program.
