Internships

Each year CEC invites a few interns to help us with our programs and special projects. Currently, CEC is hiring for the following internships in our Denver office: Development and Smart Growth and Transportation. We also have internships available in our Craig field office. Please view the internship descriptions below for more information. All internships are open until filled, on a rolling basis.

Colorado Environmental Coalition is a statewide nonprofit organization that has been working to protect Colorado's natural heritage since 1965. The Coalition works to protect Colorado's environment by educating and mobilizing citizens, providing technical and organizing assistance to environmental organizations and other allies, and uniting and supporting them in coalitions that defend and preserve Colorado's natural heritage and quality of life.

Unless otherwise noted, all internships are 10-15 hours per week, for 3-6 months from start date. Some evening or weekend work may be required. No stipends or benefits are currently avaialble. The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an intern to successfully perform the essential functions of this assignment. Intern regularly walks, bends, stoops, climbs stairs, and lifts up to 35 pounds. Offices and buildings are totally smoke-free. Position: Summer Outreach Intern
Location: Denver, plus travel.

Position Summary: This intern will work directly with the Membership and Volunteer Coordinator, as well as other staff to organize, execute, and attend community projects and outreach events, as well as aid in the organization of our new Summer Outreach Task Force. The internship will be split by 70% community outreach work and 30% organizing and recruiting. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about Colorado conservation issues, gain community organizing and campaign experience, conduct grassroots activism and participate in winning campaigns to protect wild lands and quality of life in Colorado. Interns will benefit from gaining invaluable contacts within the conservation community, credit for school work based on individual program requirements and a fun, invaluable experience with a local, conservation organization.

Schedule and Benefits: This position will be required to work weekends and some holidays. Fridays-Mondays with most Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday off. Although this is an unpaid position, interns will be paid for travel to and from events and a meal stipend during events.

Responsibilities: Engage citizens on Colorado conservation issues through tabling and various festivals and events Assist CEC organizers with petition drives, phone banks, press events, turnout for hearings and events, supervising volunteers and other campaign activities as needed Help with database management, data entry and other projects as needed Utilize multiple social networking and media tools to promote CEC, our volunteer program and to expand our network

Minimum Qualifications: The ideal candidate for this position is outgoing and enthusiastic about working with people, has excellent communication and problem solving skills and most importantly, a passion for protecting Colorado's wild lands and quality of life. Students with majors in the areas of environmental studies, political science, liberal arts, geography and communications are encouraged to apply.

Specific background requirements requested include:

  • Experience organizing meetings and trainings.
  • Familiarity with leading volunteers and organizing on environmental issues are helpful
  • Excellent organizational, communication and presentation skills
  • Working knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint; databases, a plus
  • Capacity to effectively work with diverse individuals and constituencies

Special Requirements: Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed. Have own vehicle with valid Colorado Driver's License, registration and insurance that can reliably travel throughout Colorado, sometimes on short notice.

Position: West Slope Community Organizing/Outreach Intern
Location: Craig, plus travel throughout the west slope of Colorado

Position Summary: This intern will work directly with the Northwest Organizer as well as other staff to organize, execute, and attend community projects and outreach events and will additionally help with day-to-day office work. The internship will be split by 30% community outreach work, 40% web based advocacy and 30% event planning and office projects.  This is an excellent opportunity to learn about Colorado conservation issues, gain community organizing and campaign experience, conduct grassroots activism and participate in winning campaigns to protect wild lands and quality of life in Colorado.  Interns will benefit from gaining invaluable contacts within the conservation community, credit for school work based on individual program requirements and a fun, invaluable experience with a local, conservation organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Take a lead on Web based advocacy for western slope campaigns
  • Engage citizens on Colorado conservation issues through presentations, meetings and other public events
  • Connect local communities to conservation campaigns through outreach and education to citizens and local businesses
  • Assist CEC organizers with petition drives, phone banks, press events, turnout for hearings and events, supervising volunteers and other campaign activities as needed
  • Help with database management, data entry and other projects as needed
  • Lead hikes into key wild lands surrounding Craig and on the Western Slope
  • Work to organize and craft press releases as well as capturing video using our equipment
