Each year CEC invites a few interns to help us with our programs and special projects in exchange for a small stipend or school credit. Currently, CEC is hiring for the Legislative Advacacy, Media, Water and Energy Campaign Internships on the Front Range and the West Slope Field Internship in Grand Junction.  Please view the internship descriptions below for more information.

Front Range Organizing Intern - Energy

Location: Denver, plus some travel along the Front Range
Deadline for submission: Open until filled

Position Summary: The Energy Organizing Intern will work directly with the Program Director to assist with organizing outreach and projects, focusing on statewide energy and global warming issues. A major focus will be to build public support to achieve a balanced energy program that protects Colorado’s wildlands, wildlife, communities, water, and quality of life while appropriately providing for Colorado’s energy needs. The Energy Organizing Intern will educate the public, develop strategic communications materials, build diverse ally support for specific goals, and conduct outreach to elected officials, civic organizations, and others.  

The position provides the opportunity to attend community outreach events to build support for CEC’s current campaigns as well as helping with day-to-day office work. This internship offers an excellent opportunity to learn about Colorado conservation issues, gain community organizing and campaign experience, conduct grassroots activism, and participate in winning campaigns to protect wild lands and quality of life in Colorado. Upon successful completion, interns will receive a certificate of internship, invaluable contacts within the conservation community, credit for school work based on individual program requirements and a fun, informative experience with a local conservation organization.

Responsibilities:
• Work to protect priority landscapes from proposed harmful energy projects.
• Implement organizing strategies to achieve CEC campaign and project goals.
• Advocate for state legislative priorities on clean energy and global warming.
• Organize support for CEC campaign and project goals from a diversity of interests, including citizens, sportsmen, and clean energy business community and local governments across the state.
• Assist with statewide efforts, such as public presentations and major press events.
• Coordinate effective media outreach on energy and global warming issues. Work to organize and craft press releases as well as capturing video using CEC’s equipment.
• Take a lead on Web-based advocacy for CEC priority campaigns.
• Connect local communities to conservation campaigns through outreach and education to citizens and local businesses.
• Assist CEC organizers with petition drives, phone banks, press events, turnout for hearings and events, supervising volunteers, and other campaign activities as needed.
• Help with database management, data entry, and other projects as needed.

Term of Position: 6 months from starting date

Work Schedule: 15-20 hours/week (includes some weekends and evenings)

Compensation: College credit may be avaialbale. This is an unpaid internship; no benefits are included.

Minimum Qualifications: The ideal candidate for this position is outgoing and enthusiastic about working with people, has excellent communication and problem solving skills and most importantly, a passion for protecting Colorado’s wildlands and quality of life. Students with majors in the areas of environmental studies, political science, liberal arts, geography and communications are encouraged to apply. Specific background requirements requested include:

• Experience with wilderness education or leading hikes, training can be provided
• Familiarity with leading volunteers and organizing on environmental issues are helpful
• Excellent organizational, communication and presentation skills
• Ability to multi-task and manage short and long-term deadlines
• Working knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint; databases, a plus
• Capacity to effectively work with diverse individuals and constituencies

Special Job Requirements: Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed. Have own vehicle with valid Colorado Driver’s License, registration and insurance that can reliably travel throughout Colorado, sometimes on short notice.

Physical Demands: Intern regularly walks, bends, stoops and climbs stairs. Must be able to lift and carry tabling materials, packages and supplies up to 35 pounds. Offices and buildings are totally smoke-free.

Legislative Advocacy & Outreach Intern

Location: Denver

Position Summary: This internship will focus on community organizing and outreach for CEC’s legislative advocacy program, “Capitol Watch”. Internship responsibilities will include recruiting and engaging volunteers and community members in advocacy work throughout the legislative session, January-May. Interns will motivate volunteers to take action on conservation community priorities and will be responsible for creatively utilizing online media, such as facebook, myspace, blogs, and webinars in order to disseminate information about key bills and legislators in targeted districts. Interns will also be responsible for sending out website and email updates, as well as making contacts with volunteers and district constituents. These internships offer an excellent opportunity to learn about Colorado conservation issues, gain community organizing and campaign experience, conduct grassroots activism, and participate in campaigns that aim to change environmental legislation on the state level and improve the quality of life in Colorado. Upon successful completion, interns will receive a certificate of internship, invaluable contacts within the conservation community, credit for school work based on individual program requirements, and a fun, instructive experience with a local conservation organization.

Responsibilities:
• Represent CEC at networking events, recruit volunteers, and educate citizens in order to organize grassroots support for CEC legislative priorities.
• Set up educational forums, phone banks, turnout for hearings and events, and other campaign activities as needed.
• Help organizers build business and community support for our campaigns through outreach, media, and other activities.
• Assist CEC staff with phone calls and mailings to our members and activists as needed. 
• Update website, facebook, and myspace pages regularly with legislative information.
• Assist with database management, data entry, and other projects as needed.
• Conduct weekly meetings with supervisor and other interns.

Term of Position:  Winter/Spring Semester: The position will follow a normal school break schedule, beginning January and ending in May.

Work Schedule: 15 hours/week (includes some weekends and evenings).

Minimum Qualifications:  The ideal candidate for this position is outgoing and enthusiastic about working with people, has excellent communication and problem solving skills, and most importantly, has a passion for protecting Colorado’s environment and quality of life. Students studying in the areas of environmental studies, political science, liberal arts, geography, and communications are encouraged to apply. Specific background requirements include:
• Experience managing volunteers and some organizing experience are helpful, training will be provided.   
• Superior organizational, communication, and presentation skills.
• Ability to multi-task and manage short- and long-term deadlines.
• Working knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint; databases, a plus.
• Capacity to work effectively with a diversity of people and constituencies.
• Have own vehicle with valid Colorado driver’s license, valid registration, and insurance in order to travel throughout Colorado, sometimes on short notice.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed.

Water Caucus Outreach/Research Intern

Location: Denver

Position Description: The focus of this position will be community outreach and research projects that will build support for protecting Colorado’s rivers and watersheds.  This internship will offer an excellent opportunity to learn about Colorado water issues, gain community organizing and campaign experience, and participate in research projects that aim to protect our quality of life in Colorado.

Qualifications:  The ideal candidate for this internship is enthusiastic about working with people, has excellent communication skills and is passionate about protecting Colorado’s environment and quality of life. The intern must be available for work on occasional weekends and some evenings.  Some organizing experience is useful. General responsibilities include:

• Working with water organizers to arrange and execute water education forums, Water 101 slideshow presentations, press events, turnout for hearings and events, and other campaign activities as needed
• Assist Water Caucus Coordinator with research projects on Colorado water issues that will be used in community and legislative campaigns
• Coordinate bi-monthly Water Action Network online newsletter and update water website
• Assist with database management, data entry and other projects as needed
• Identify media opportunities for water issues and assist with media outreach
• Conduct outreach to diverse allies

Term of Position:  January through May 2009
Work Schedule: 10-15 hours/week

Media Outreach Internship

Location: Denver
Deadline for submission: Open until filled

Position Summary 
Intern will be primarily involved in helping creatively utilize social networking sites – such as Facebook, MySpace, blogs, YouTube, and other online communities – to disseminate information about CEC priorities and engage volunteers and activists. Help maintain CEC website, and craft and upload advocacy campaigns and e-mails. This position will additionally assist with outreach and communiqués to underserved populations and non-traditional membership groups.  Intern will also be responsible for assisting Online Communications Coordinator with an assortment of data entry, website upkeep, and other online outreach tasks as necessary.

Intern will also help with creation of video and audio (podcasts) clips for use in campaign outreach and education. Interns will conceive, record, and edit videos and podcasts on a variety of issues, and help publish media in a number of venues for optimal campaign and outreach use. Intern may also help brainstorm and produce other creative online media projects.

Intern will also be available to assist Membership Director and Manager of Information Services with data entry projects as needed.

This internship offers an excellent opportunity to learn about Colorado conservation issues, gain online outreach and organizing experience, and add some creative input to campaigns and online outreach strategies. Upon successful completion, interns will receive a certificate of internship, invaluable contacts within the conservation community, credit for school work based on individual program requirements, and a fun, instructive experience with a local conservation organization. Intern may receive a small stipend, and students may receive school credits depending on policies of student’s school and program requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Update CEC and coalition partner websites, blogs, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, and other social networking pages regularly with important campaign updates and outreach efforts.
  • Help maintain CEC website, and craft and upload advocacy campaigns and e-mails.
  • Be available to help record events, meetings and press conferences (primarily in the Denver area, but occasionally may be opportunities for travel; occasionally may also require an evening or weekend).
  • Help conceive and create and informational videos and podcasts for specific campaign issues.
  • Help format and finalize online photo database.
  • Help staff conceive, create, and publish podcasts on campaign and organizational issues.
  • Assist with database management, data entry, and other projects as needed.

Term of Position
Winter/Spring Semester: The position will follow a normal school break schedule, beginning January and ending in May.

Work Schedule
15-25 hours/week, flexible schedule.

Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate for this position is outgoing and enthusiastic about working with people, a desire to use creative media and messages to communicate about our issues, has excellent communication and problem solving skills, is detail oriented, and has a passion for protecting Colorado’s environment and quality of life. Students studying in the areas of environmental studies, political science, liberal arts, geography, film-making, or communications are encouraged to apply. Specific background requirements include:

  • Superior organizational, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to distill campaign messages and conceive of and execute creative storytelling/message communication.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage short- and long-term deadlines.
  • Some experience with audio/video editing a plus, though training will be provided.
  • Some experience with social networking web sites (Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, etc.)
  • Some experience with Microsoft Excel and manipulating and graphing data
  • Detail-oriented and willing to assist with data-entry and web site maintenance tasks.

Some travel around Colorado’s Front Range and West Slope may be optional; flexible work hours, including some ability to telecommute.
